About the role:
Our client is seeking a Senior Health & Safety Officer responsible for providing dedicated Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) leadership during night-shift operations to ensure compliance with company policies, client HSE requirements, and Zambian occupational health and safety legislation. The role is critical in maintaining a safe working environment, promoting a proactive safety culture, and ensuring all construction, earthworks, and mining activities are conducted safely and efficiently. The Candidate should preferably have relevant construction, earthworks and/or mining experience, together with a recognised health and safety qualification and previous experience overseeing night-shift operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide dedicated HSE supervision during night-shift operations across the project site.
- Monitor compliance with company HSE policies, client safety standards, and statutory regulations.
- Conduct routine site inspections, safety audits, and workplace hazard assessments.
- Ensure all personnel comply with safe work procedures, permit-to-work systems, and risk control measures.
- Monitor high-risk activities, including excavation, earthworks, heavy equipment operations, lifting activities, confined space entry, and work at height.
- Lead toolbox talks, safety briefings, and shift handovers to reinforce safe work practices.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions, ensuring timely reporting and implementation of corrective actions.
- Verify that all contractors and employees use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Stop unsafe work where necessary and recommend corrective or preventive actions.
- Support emergency response activities and ensure emergency equipment remains operational and accessible.
- Maintain accurate HSE records, inspection reports, incident reports, and compliance documentation.
- Liaise with client HSE representatives to ensure continued compliance with contractual HSE requirements.
- Mentor supervisors and employees on safety awareness and best practices.
- Participate in safety committee meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Monitor environmental compliance, including waste management, dust suppression, spill prevention, and housekeeping standards.
- Promote a positive safety culture through coaching, leadership, and visible commitment to HSE excellence.
Minimum Requirements:
- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Safety Management, or a related discipline.
- Membership with a recognised professional safety body is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in Health, Safety and Environment, with at least 2 years in a senior or supervisory role.
- Proven experience within mining, construction, earthworks, or heavy civil engineering projects.
- Previous experience supervising or overseeing night-shift operations.
- Experience working on client-controlled mining sites and complying with stringent client HSE standards.
- Experience conducting incident investigations, audits, inspections, and risk assessments.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of Zambian occupational health and safety legislation and mining safety requirements.
- Excellent understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment, and incident investigation methodologies.
